Undergraduate Awards and Programs Schedule

Important Notice

(1) This Schedule applies to programs approved prior to 1 January 2013 which are listed in Appendix 1. For all proposed, new and revised programs approved on or after 1 January 2013 please refer to the following documents:

Section 1 - Introduction

(2) This schedule supports the implementation of the Awards and Graduation Policy and Governance Rule. The Governance Rule list each of the qualification types offered by the University. This Schedule applies to the undergraduate programs approved by Academic Senate which are listed in Section 16, List of Approved Programs of this schedule. Programs not listed in Section 16 will be available in the Policy Library within specific program schedules.

(3) In the event of an inconsistency between lower level policy documents and a Rule(s) or Schedule to the Rule(s), the Rule(s) made by Council prevails to the extent of the inconsistency.

(4) In the event of an inconsistency between an Academic Senate policy document and a Faculty policy, procedure or guideline, the policy document of Academic Senate prevails to the extent of the inconsistency.

Section 3 - Program Structures – Diploma

Model D – Undergraduate Diploma

Volume of learning (Duration) 1 year minimum
Structure (including minimum requirements and restrictions) The program will contain: 1. a total of 80 units; and 2. a minimum of 10 units of electives.
Admission An applicant will have met the admission and selection criteria for the relevant program as set by the Faculty, and approved by Academic Senate, at the time of application. This may include special admission procedures and selection criteria.
Additional Requirements Any approved compulsory program components (CPC) or pre-requisites.
Credit Maximum of 50 units of credit.
Qualification for the Award To qualify for the Diploma, a student will have satisfactorily completed a program of study, approved by the Program and Course Approval Committee on behalf of Academic Senate, totalling not less than 80 units.
Grading of the Award The award will be conferred as an ordinary award.
Additional Information The diploma may be studied concurrently with an undergraduate or postgraduate program.

Section 5 - Program Structures – Bachelor (240 unit)

Model A - 240 Unit Program

Admission An applicant will have met the admission and selection criteria for the relevant program as set by the Faculty, and approved by Academic Senate, at the time of application. This may include special admission procedures and selection criteria.
Additional Requirements Any approved compulsory program components (CPC) or pre-requisites.
Credit Maximum of 160 units of credit.
Qualification for the Award To qualify for a Bachelor degree, a student will have satisfactorily completed a program of study, approved by the Program and Course Approval Committee on behalf of Academic Senate, totalling not less than 240 units.
Grading of the Award The degree will be awarded as an ordinary degree, or the degree, will be awarded 'with Distinction' to those students who gain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 6.0 based on all studies undertaken in the program. A separate 80 unit End-on Honours program may be available.

Model B(1) - 240 Unit Program

Approval may be granted for core courses exceeding the maximum listed above for practical/professional placement requirements.
Admission An applicant will have met the admission and selection criteria for the relevant program as set by the Faculty, and approved by Academic Senate, at the time of application. This may include special admission procedures and selection criteria.

Credit Maximum of 160 units of credit.

1. a total of 320 units;

2. a maximum of 120 units at the 1000 level;

3. a sequence of core courses, with a minimum of:
  a. 60 units and a maximum of 80 units at 1000 level;
  b. 60 units and a maximum of 80 units at 2000 level;
  c. 40 units and a maximum of 60 units at 3000 level;
  d. 40 units at 4000 level.

4. a minimum of 20 units of electives; and

5. a research component of at least 30 units, including:
  a. 10 units or more research related courses (or the equivalent in multiple courses) at 3000 level or higher; and
  b. one research thesis/dissertation with a unit value of not less than 10 units which will report on one or more individual research projects at 4000/5000 level and assessed in accordance with Clause 9.

The research component must be included as part of the prescribed or directed courses in the program.

Approval may be granted for core courses exceeding the maximum listed above for practical/professional placement requirements.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the relevant Faculty is authorised to determine a student's eligibility for the Award on the recommendation of a Head of School on the basis of the successful completion of prescribed courses and the research component.
Grading of the Award All students undertaking the program who have completed the requirements for admission to the relevant Bachelor degree of the University are eligible to be considered for the conferring of the award with honours. The degree will be awarded as an ordinary degree, or will be awarded with honours according to the program structure and formula approved by the Academic Senate. There will be two classes of Honours, namely: - Class I; - Class II Division 1; and - Class II Division 2.

Model B(4) - 320 Unit Program with Embedded Plus (+) Honours

2. a maximum of 120 units at the 1000 level;

3. a minimum of 40 units at 4000 level;

  a. 80 units at 1000 level;
  b. 80 units at 2000 level, and
  c. 60 units at 3000 level.

5. a minimum of 20 units of electives; and

6. sometimes a choice of majors, where the major is at least 80 units but no more than 240 units, comprising a sequence of
compulsory and/or directed courses including no less than 40 units at 3000 or 4000 level.

7. a research component of at least 30 units, including:
  a. 10 units or more research related courses (or the equivalent in multiple courses) at 3000 level or higher; and
  b. one research thesis/dissertation with a unit value of not less than 20 units which will report on one or more individual research projects at 4000/5000 level and assessed in accordance with Clause 9.

The Research Component must be provided as an alternative to pass courses of the same unit value. Approval may be granted for core courses exceeding the maximum listed above for practical/professional placement requirements.

This may include special admission procedures and selection criteria. Admission to the Embedded plus (+) honours stream will only be available to students undertaking the program who have:
  a. achieved a GPA of 5.5 or more over the program to the point where the Research Component is integrated;
  b. achieved a GPA of 5.5 at either the 3000/4000 or 4000/5000 level of the program to the point where the         Research Component is integrated; and
  c. have either been invited by or have had a written application approved by the Pro Vice-Chancellor             responsible for the program; Only students admitted to the honours stream will be eligible to be               considered for the awarding of the program with honours.
Additional Requirements Any approved compulsory program components (CPC) or pre-requisites.
Credit Maximum of 210 units of credit.

Section 7 - Program Structures – End-On Honours (80 unit)

Model F(1) – 80 unit End-On Honours

(6) Separate Honours program, approved by Council, distinct from an Undergraduate program.

(7) Available only following the satisfactory completion of an approved 240 unit generalist or structured single program.

(8) Applicants will not be allowed to defer and will have to reapply for admission if unable to accept an offer of admission.

(9) In a Combined program, each program may offer and grant Honours under the same model as the relevant single program.

AQF Level Level 8
Total Units 80 units
Volume of learning (Duration) 1 year minimum
Structure (including minimum requirements and restrictions) The program will contain:
1. a minimum of 70 units at 4000 level;

2. a minimum 30 unit original research dissertation/project (not including coursework components) at the 4000 level assessed in accordance with Section 8;

3. minimum 10 units of coursework in research methodology/training at 3000/4000 level (or equivalent spread throughout the coursework courses of the program) unless an equivalent course has already been done in the undergraduate program; and

4. no coursework at less than 3000 level.
Admission An applicant for admission will have:
1. completed the relevant Bachelor award of the University, or to another cognate award approved by the Pro Vice-Chancellor;

2. completed, in that Bachelor award, the requirements of an approved major/sequence (or double major) in the discipline area, or in a cognate discipline area approved by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, to be undertaken in the Honours program;

3. achieved a GPA determined and published for each program or discipline but the minimum will be
  a. a GPA of 5.0 or higher based on all studies undertaken in the program; and/or
  b. a GPA of 5.0 or higher in the approved major/sequence;

4. applied in writing to the Pro Vice-Chancellor responsible for the honours program;

5. met any supplementary criteria (such as presentation of portfolio, interview, auditions); and

6. completed the undergraduate program within a time determined by the Pro Vice-Chancellor. Commencement in the Honours program is at discretion of the relevant School.
Additional Requirements 1. all distinguishable components of the program are to be identified either as courses or within courses. If they are courses, they must have course codes, unit value, course outline and assessment criteria;

2. all distinguishable components within courses or the program must be given a mark and students informed of their progressive mark; and

3. all component/course marks must contribute to the class of honours.
Credit No credit permitted for Honours.
Qualification for the Award To qualify for a Bachelor (Honours) degree, a student will have satisfactorily completed a program of study approved by the Program and Course Approval Committee on behalf of Academic Senate, totalling not less than 80 units. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the relevant Faculty is authorised to determine a student's eligibility for the Award on the recommendation of a Head of School on the basis of the successful completion of prescribed courses and the research component.
Grading of the Award There will be three classes of Honours, namely:
- Class I;
- Class II Division 1;
- Class II Division 2
- Class III

Section 8 - Examination of the Research Thesis / Dissertation

(10) There is to be a minimum of 2 examiners;

(11) At least one of the two examiners to be external to the School unless an external moderator is appointed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor to monitor the quality levels of theses in the discipline. The moderator is to report through the Pro Vice-Chancellor to the Academic Senate as part of the Faculty's annual report on programs;

(12) Supervisor cannot be an examiner but supervisor's advice may be sought by the Program Convenor;

(13) The final mark will be an average of the two marks given by the examiners;

(14) If there is a difference of ten percentage points or more in the assessment between the two examiners, a third examiner is to be used (not the supervisor);

(15) In all cases where three examiners are used, the final mark will usually be an average of the two closest marks with consideration being given to the written reports of the examiners; and

(16) The Faculty is to provide the student and examiners/moderators with the assessment criteria for all components of the award.

Section 9 - Calculation of End-on Honours

(17) The class of honours awarded for End-on Honours programs will be calculated using GPA:

  1. Class I: mark of 85% or over in the 80 honours units and the minimum of 75 from each examiner for the dissertation/project;
  2. Class II Division 1: mark of 75% - 84% in 80 honours units and an average mark of over 65% for the dissertation/project;
  3. Class II Division 2: mark of 65% - 74% in 80 honours units;
  4. Class III: mark of 50% - 64% in 80 honours units; or
  5. Fail: mark less than 50%.

Section 10 - Calculation of Embedded Honours

(18) The class of honours awarded for Embedded Honours programs will be calculated using WAM:

  1. A minimum WAM of 77 and a minimum mark of 75 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class 1; a minimum WAM of 72 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class 11, Division 1; a minimum WAM of 67 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class 11, Division 2; and
  2. Performance is based on a three year WAM where 2000, 3000 and 4000 level courses are weighted by 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

Section 11 - Calculation of Embedded Plus (+) Honours

(19) The class of honours awarded for Embedded Plus (+) Honours programs will be calculated using GPA:

  1. Class I: both a GPA of 6.0 or more in the 3000/4000/5000 level courses undertaken and an average mark of 85 or over for the Research Component (minimum of 30 units).
  2. If a student fails to satisfy the criteria for Class I honours, they may be offered Class II Division 1 provided they have either:
    1. both a GPA of 6.0 or more in the 3000/4000/5000 level courses undertaken and an average mark of 75 or over for the Research Component (minimum of 30 units); or
    2. both a GPA of 5.5 or more in the 3000/4000/5000 level courses undertaken and an average mark of 85 or over for the Research Component (minimum of 30 units).

(20) If a student fails to satisfy the criteria for Class II Division 1 honours, they may be offered Class II Division 2: provided they have:

  1. both a GPA of 5.5 or more in the 3000/4000/5000 level courses undertaken and an average mark of 65 or more for the Research Component (minimum of 30 units).

(21) If a student fails to satisfy the criteria for Class II Division 2 honours, they may be offered Class III provided they have:

  1. an average mark of 50 or over in the Research Component;
  2. a GPA of at least 4.0 calculated on all graded 3000/4000/5000 courses; and
  3. passed all 3000/4000/5000 courses of their approved program on the first attempt.

Section 12 - Exit Awards

(22) An exit award may be available to a student where:

  1. an exit award has been linked to the program in which the student is enrolled; 
  2. the student has satisfactorily completed the program of study to the point where they are eligible for the exit award, as approved by the Program and Course Approval Committee on behalf of Academic Senate;
  3. the student is unable to complete the remaining requirements for their original enrolment;
  4. the student has made an application, in writing, to have their enrolment transferred and therefore be awarded an exit award and
  5. the relevant Pro Vice-Chancellor has approved the application.

Section 13 - Combined Programs

(23) Students undertaking a combined program must satisfy the program requirements for the two individual programs. For the requirements of the individual programs refer to the Requirements and Structures information in program handbook description. The Requirements and Structures section is to be developed by Faculty Boards and approved by the Program and Course Approval Committee (PCAC) on behalf of Academic Senate. Submissions to PCAC for combined degrees will include a reference to the relevant section of the Combined Degree Principles and the model(s) within this schedule or another schedule.

(24) Upon completion of the requirements for each individual program in a combined program, the University confers the appropriate award. The conferrals are not necessarily made together.

(25) Unless otherwise prohibited, a student may apply to transfer from a combined program to one of the individual programs.

(26) Unless otherwise prohibited, a student, having satisfied the requirements of one of the component programs, may graduate with the appropriate award and discontinue the other component program.

Section 14 - Relaxing Provision

(27) To provide for exceptional circumstances arising in any particular case, the President of Academic Senate, on the recommendation of the relevant Deputy Vice-Chancellor or relevant Pro Vice-Chancellor may relax any provision of this Schedule.
